NPPA Slaps Rs 79.97 Lakh Notice on AstraZeneca for Alleged Betaloc-50 Overcharging

The company said the communication from the NPPA was received on July 27, 2026, while the disclosure to the stock exchanges was made on July 28, 2026. The notice relates to an alleged violation of the provisions of the DPCO, 2013.

According to the details shared by the company, the NPPA has issued a demand notice for Rs. 79,97,457, inclusive of interest calculated up to August 10, 2026. The authority has alleged that AstraZeneca Pharma India sold or marketed Betaloc-50 (Metoprolol 50 mg tablets) at a maximum retail price (MRP) higher than the ceiling price notified under the DPCO, 2013.

The regulator further alleged that the company failed to implement the revised ceiling price on stocks available in the market following Notification S.O. 644(E) dated March 2, 2016, and Notification S.O. 1352(E) dated June 2, 2016, concerning Betaloc-50 tablets. As per the notice, this allegedly resulted in overcharging during the period from June to July 2016.

The NPPA has sought recovery of the alleged overcharged amount along with the applicable interest and has directed that the payment be made within 30 days from the date of receipt of the notice. The company also disclosed that the financial impact of the matter, to the extent currently quantifiable, is the demand amount of Rs. 79,97,457, including interest calculated up to August 10, 2026.

The company stated that it is reviewing the demand notice and will take appropriate legal steps in accordance with applicable law.
