Pfizer to Discontinue Minipress XL in India, Receives USD 13.9 Mn From US Parent

Mumbai: Pfizer Limited has announced that it will discontinue the marketing, distribution and sale of Minipress XL in India with effect from September 7, 2026.
The decision follows Pfizer Inc., USA's decision to discontinue the manufacture of Minipress XL. In connection with the discontinuation, Pfizer Limited will receive a lump-sum payment of USD 13.9 million (approximately Rs 131.38 crore) from Pfizer Inc., USA.
Minipress XL is a prazosin hydrochloride controlled-release tablet marketed by Pfizer Limited in India. According to Pfizer's product labeling, the medicine is indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) as well as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The product is available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg strengths.
Pfizer introduced Minipress in the United States in 1976 as a treatment for high blood pressure. The company's official history identifies Minipress as a prazosin hydrochloride product developed for controlling hypertension.
The discontinuation comes as Pfizer continues to focus on its broader portfolio of medicines and vaccines. According to the company's official website, Pfizer is a global biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery, development and manufacture of medicines and vaccines, with operations spanning around 200 countries and territories. Its current areas of focus include internal medicine, inflammation and immunology, vaccines and oncology.
The company has also emphasized research and development as a core part of its strategy, with a pipeline covering investigational medicines and vaccines across multiple therapeutic areas.
