Pharmacy Store Owner to Be Booked for Abetment After 20-Year-Old Attendant Found Dead in Pune

Suicide
Pune: Pune Police are set to register a case of abetment of suicide against a pharmacy store owner after a 20-year-old woman was found dead by hanging at his flat in the Baner area of the city. The decision follows a complaint by the victim's brother, who alleged sustained mental and physical harassment by the accused, prompting police to re-examine the circumstances surrounding the death.
The incident occurred on January 28, when the young woman was found hanging in a room at her uncle’s residence in Baner. She was originally from Pali district in Rajasthan and had been working as an attendant at one of the two medical stores owned by her maternal uncle. Initially, the police registered an accidental death case.
However, after the woman’s brother approached the Baner police, fresh allegations of harassment emerged. He claimed that his sister had been subjected to repeated mental and physical abuse by her uncle, which allegedly drove her to take the extreme step. Following this complaint, the police initiated the process of booking the pharmacy store owner under relevant sections for abetment of suicide.
Senior Inspector Chandrashekhar Sawant of Baner police stated that no suicide note was found at the scene. Investigators inspected the room where the woman was found dead and recorded statements from family members and others connected to the case as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The complainant also informed the police that this was not the first such incident in the family. He alleged that his elder sister had died by suicide around five years ago under similar circumstances. She too had been working as an attendant at one of the same pharmacy stores in Baner, and the family had raised allegations of harassment in that case as well, according to a report by The Times of India.
Police officials told TOI that the investigation is continuing and that all aspects, including the previous death and the alleged pattern of harassment, are being examined before formally filing charges. Further action will be taken based on the evidence and statements collected during the probe.
