Pregabalin Predicament: Experts advocate caution as deaths linked to anxiety drug soar
New York: A surge in deaths associated with the widely prescribed anxiety drug, pregabalin, prompts crucial considerations, news agency PTI has recently reported. The report claims that in 2018, 187 deaths in England and Wales were linked to pregabalin, a number that more than doubled to 441 in 2022, raising concerns about its safety.
Experts Ian Hamilton, Honorary Fellow, Department of Health Sciences, University of York; Harry Sumnall, Professor in Substance Use, Liverpool John Moores University, emphasized that recent media reports drawing parallels to a "US-style opioid epidemic" may instigate unwarranted panic, given the vast disparity in death tolls between opioids and pregabalin. Understanding the complexities surrounding pregabalin usage is vital to address the growing fatalities.
Pregabalin (also known by the brand names Lyrica and Alzain) is used to treat a variety of health conditions, including epilepsy, nerve pain and anxiety. The drug was first approved for use in Europe and the US in 2004.
