FRA Directs Medical, Pharmacy Colleges to Refund Overcharged Fees to Students

New Delhi- The Fee Regulatory Committee (FRA), which also functions as the admission monitoring committee, recently directed some pharmacy colleges to refund the fees they had allegedly overcharged the students.
A press release has also been issued in this regard, according to which, FRA has mentioned that 8 students who joined the B Pharma course in Acharya and BM Reddy College of Pharmacy, Bengaluru have received a refund of Rs 5.40 lakh. This step was taken after the students complained about excessive fees being charged to them.
Along with this, Rs 8 lakh has also been refunded to two medical students admitted to GR Medical College in Mangaluru. "In medical courses too, Rs 8 lakh has been refunded to two medical students admitted to GR Medical College in Mangaluru," Justice B Srinivasa Gowda, chairman of the committee, told DH Media news report. He added that the excess amount was refunded to the students in the form of a demand draft.
Meanwhile, FRA has also recently directed all the unaided private professional educational institutions of India affiliated with universities running undergraduate and postgraduate courses in health sciences/medical not to demand fees or any other sum of money exceeding the prescribed upper limit at the time of admission.
On this, Medical Dialogues has earlier reported that the Authority found some cases where students were denied admission for not paying extra fees, charges and excessive demand for payment of caution money. On this, the Authority has decided that the demand for caution money and other deposits should be made only after the admission process is completed and admission is confirmed.
