Zero, Single-Digit Marks Despite Attempting Exams: Bihar BPharma Results Trigger Student Protests
Patna: The recently declared BPharma results in Bihar have triggered anger and protests among students, with several candidates alleging that they received extremely low marks, including zero, 3, 4 and 5, despite claiming that they had attempted the questions in their answer sheets.
The results of several private colleges affiliated with the Bihar University of Health Sciences (BUHS) have reportedly recorded very poor outcomes, with students alleging that a substantial number of candidates have been unsuccessful. In several colleges, reportedly 50% to as high as 80–90% of students were declared unsuccessful.
Following the announcement of the BPharma results, students staged protests in multiple districts, including Patna, Samastipur, Jehanabad and Rohtas. The protesting students are demanding a fair review and re-evaluation of their answer sheets, arguing that the marks awarded do not reflect their performance in the examinations.
Students have elaborated that they prepared throughout the academic year and appeared for their examinations properly, but were surprised to find extremely low scores, including zero marks, on their mark sheets. The issue has consequently raised questions among students regarding the evaluation of their answer scripts.
Another issue emerging from the controversy concerns allegations surrounding the functioning of some private pharmacy institutions. Students have reportedly alleged that certain colleges had given assurances at the time of admission that the examination and examination centre would be “managed.” However, the university administration is reported to have significantly tightened its examination and evaluation procedures this year.
According to the recent media report in News18 Hindi, stricter examination and evaluation practices may have exposed students who had allegedly relied on such assurances. The controversy has also brought attention to allegations that some private nursing and pharmacy colleges may be providing education largely on paper, without sufficient academic infrastructure or qualified teaching staff.
A lack of adequate and qualified faculty could leave students without proper academic guidance and examination preparation. As a result, when examinations are conducted under stricter and more rigorous conditions, students may face difficulties in answering questions correctly.
Amid the protests, the BUHS Controller of Examinations has maintained a firm position on the matter and said that he has no connection with practices that may have occurred in the past. The university administration has maintained that examinations and answer-sheet evaluations are now being conducted with greater transparency and strictness.
Students who believe there is an error in their results have been advised to use the prescribed government procedure for re-checking and scrutiny of their answer sheets. This process provides students with an official avenue to seek a review of their marks.
The controversy has also raised broader concerns about the quality of pharmacy education and academic standards in Bihar, particularly at private institutions, and has intensified demands for greater transparency in examinations and evaluation, reports News18 Hindi.
