Nurse attacked with saline stand at Tirupati Hospital, suffers head injury
Tirupati: In another case of violence against medical professionals, a nurse at S V R Ruia Government General Hospital in Tirupati was attacked with a saline stand by a patient who was allegedly delirious due to poisoning on Sunday night, causing an uproar among the hospital staff.
The incident occurred when a patient from Madanapalle was admitted four days prior following a suicide attempt. The accused was undergoing treatment for poisoning and he experienced agitation, a known side effect of his medication.
In his distress, he struck one of the nurses on the head with a saline stand, sources reported. Security personnel swiftly intervened, restraining the patient and relocating him to another room. The nurse, who sustained a head injury requiring eight sutures, is currently receiving medical care at the hospital, reports The Hans India.
Upon learning of the incident, Ruia Hospital Superintendent Dr G Ravi Prabhu paid a visit to the hospital to learn about the whole situation. Although the West Police were initially informed, the hospital administration decided not to file a formal complaint, citing the patient’s mental condition as the cause of the attack. However, several staff members expressed their concern and frustration, noting that similar incidents have been happening with alarming frequency at the hospital without any subsequent action being taken, reports the Daily. They alleged that the hospital authorities were downplaying the severity of the attack by withholding details.
In solidarity with their injured colleague, the nursing staff at Ruia Hospital staged a protest on Monday. They called for strict measures against those who assault healthcare workers and demanded that all staff vacancies be filled to alleviate their workload. Additionally, they urged the hospital administration to grant paid leave to a nurse, who was injured while performing her duties.
