Study Assesses Postpartum Mothers’ Knowledge Regarding Breastfeeding During the Postnatal Period

Postnatal care refers to the care provided to the mother and newborn from birth through the first six weeks after delivery. The primary objective of care during the early postnatal period is to support the physical well-being of both mother and infant while promoting bonding between the newborn and family. Breastfeeding is a critical component of postnatal care. This study aimed to assess postpartum mothers’ knowledge regarding breastfeeding.
A total of 132 pregnant women were assessed over a six-month period, which included data collection and follow-up using a structured questionnaire.
A total of 132 mothers participated in the study, with the largest proportion belonging to the 20–29-year age group. Before counselling, mothers demonstrated awareness of nutritional value (100%), colostrum (68.94%), safe breastfeeding positions and burping (30.3%), exclusive breastfeeding (83.3%), frequency of feeding (83.3%), and breast milk pump use (59.85%).
Following counselling, all mothers reported awareness of breastfeeding positions, burping, and the frequency and duration of breastfeeding. In addition, 31.06% and 29.54% of mothers correctly followed the counselled procedures for operating, storing, and cleaning the breast pump, respectively.
One aspect of initiating postpartum care involves educating mothers to equip them with the necessary knowledge to manage both their own well-being and that of their newborns during challenging situations. The postnatal period begins within the first 24 hours after childbirth and extends through six weeks, or 42 days, after birth. During this period, the baby's physiology adapts, and the mother remains at risk for postpartum haemorrhage and other critical illnesses. Some problems, such as infection, may emerge during the first week after birth.
Traditionally, across different times and cultures, pregnant women have been supported by knowledgeable women, family members, and close friends who assist their transition to motherhood with encouragement and care. Pregnant women are often treated with special attention, provided nutritious food, and protected as much as possible from stress and heavy physical labour.
Today, pregnancy and childbirth are often considered medical events rather than only normal life events. Women commonly use commercial home pregnancy tests to determine pregnancy status and then consult health care providers for confirmation. During prenatal visits, women frequently express concern about the health of the baby.
The study of 132 patients found that the most prominent age group was 20–29 years. Most mothers were aware of colostrum, safe breastfeeding positions, burping, and the importance of immunization in reducing mortality and preventing disease. Counselling significantly improved postnatal mothers' knowledge.
Less than half of the mothers could recognize danger signs and their remedies, although all participants preferred medical care for such signs. While most understood the importance of hygiene in reducing mortality, fewer than half knew the correct procedures for newborn care, such as cleaning the mouth after breastfeeding, optimal bathing, and hair washing frequency. More than half were aware of suitable clothing materials for newborns.
Overall, the findings indicate that structured counselling can substantially enhance mothers’ knowledge of postnatal care and breastfeeding practices.
