Gouty arthritis associated with heightened risk of MI and heart failure
China: A review article published in the International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases has concluded that in both males and females with a history of Gouty Arthritis (GA), there exists a correlation between GA and the risk of Myocardial Infarction (MI) and Heart Failure (HF).
Dr Qinglin Wu performed a meta-analysis of published cohort studies to determine the association between GA and with risk of Myocardial Infarction and Heart failure.
Along with evaluating the objective mentioned above, researchers also aimed to provide evidence for clinical management.
The study methods included an analysis of five electronic databases to evaluate this association (inception - July 28, 2022).
Random or fixed-effect models were used to calculate Relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).
The study results could be summarised as follows:
- 408 443 GA patients and 10 402 777 non-GA patients were included in the study.
- For the meta-analysis, eleven articles were selected, which had 13 studies.
- There was an association between GA and the risk of Myocardial Infarction and Heart Failure.
- The relative risk was 1.75 and 2.00 for Myocardial Infarction and Heart Failure, respectively.
- Female GA patients had a higher Myocardial Infarction and Heart Failure risk than male patients in the subgroup analysis.
- Among GA patients, younger patients had a higher MI risk than older patients. The relative risk for patients aged ≤44 years, the relative risk was 2.82 and 1.85, and for patients aged ≥70, RR was 1.52.
- In Gouty Arthritis patients, there is the occurrence of non-fatal MI.
To conclude, Gouty arthritis correlates with the risk of Myocardial Infarction and Heart Failure in both males and females; however, female or younger GA patients are at higher risk for Myocardial Infarction and Heart Failure.
