Pancreatic stone disease witnesses increase in Kashmir
Srinagar: As the number of pancreatic stone disease witnesses increase in Kashmir valley, Ist Pancreatic Society of India (PSI) Continuing Medical Education (CME) conference impressed upon the need for extensive research in this field to help decrease the incidence and complications associated with the disease disorders.
A spokesman of the society said on Monday that Ist CME conference of PSI was held at Dobiwan in North Kashmir district of Baramulla which was attended by among other dignitaries, including former Director S K Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Prof M S Khuroo,, Prof A G Ahangar, Director SKIMS and Prof Altaf Kirmani, Dean medical faculty SKIMS.
He said the meeting was attended by doctors belonging to both medical and surgical fields from GMC, Srinagar and SKIMS.
A total of 9 papers were presented at the CME highlighting the various laproscopic, endoscopic and surgical advancements in the field of pancreatic diseases.
The link between pancreatic diseases and diabetes was discussed by Dr Ashraf Ganai, Professor Endocrinology, SKIMS.
He impressed upon the need for extensive research in this field to help decrease the incidence and complications associated with pancreatic disorders.
Speaking upon the occasion Prof Khuroo lauded the efforts of Prof Omar J Shah, Head Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, SKIMS for coming up with the idea for formation of such an academic platform.
He highlighted the efforts of academicians at SKIMS for their contributions which has gained international recognition.
He motivated those present to continue their research and contribute to our understanding about pancreatic diseases.
Prof Ahangar appreciated the futuristic vision of Prof Khuroo and acknowledged his contributions towards the understanding of gastrointestinal diseases present endemically in the valley.
He said that Prof Khuroo has been an ideal mentor for medical professionals.
He promised for all possible support for PSI.
Dr GN Yatoo, Professor Gastroenterology, SKIMS briefed the audience about the recent advances in endoscopic management of pancreatic stone diseases which is present in high numbers in the valley.
Dr Iqbal Saleem, Professor Surgery, and Dr Mushtaq Chalkoo, Associate Professor General Surgery, GMC Srinagar presented their experience with advanced laproscopic procedures in pancreatic surgery.
At the concluding speech, Prof Khuroo asked the members to work diligently towards strengthening of the society.
He contributed a financial support to society and asked the members present to work towards formation of a framework for the society and to carry on the legacy of imparting education and research.
