COVID-19 Infection tied to Higher Risk of Vascular and Inflammatory Disorders in Children Compared to Vaccination: Study
A UK study published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health has found that children and adolescents face a significantly higher risk of developing rare vascular and inflammatory conditions—such as blood clots, myocarditis, and pericarditis—after a COVID-19 infection compared to after vaccination. The findings provide robust evidence supporting the safety of COVID-19 vaccines in younger populations and emphasize the greater health risks associated with infection itself rather than immunization.
Researchers analyzed national health data to assess the occurrence of these conditions in children following either COVID-19 infection or vaccination. The analysis revealed that while both infection and vaccination can trigger immune and inflammatory responses, the incidence of severe complications was markedly higher in those who had been infected. In particular, the rates of myocarditis and blood clot–related complications were more frequent after infection, highlighting the protective role of vaccination in mitigating such risks. The authors also pointed out that the overall rates of these adverse events remained very low, further reinforcing the safety profile of COVID-19 vaccines for children and adolescents.
The study underscores the importance of continuing vaccination campaigns for younger age groups as part of broader public health strategies. By preventing infection, vaccines reduce the likelihood of serious cardiovascular and inflammatory complications that can occur even after mild or asymptomatic cases. The authors advocate for improved communication with parents and caregivers to build vaccine confidence and highlight the data-driven benefits of immunization. Continued research and post-vaccination monitoring will help refine safety assessments and ensure optimal protection for children against both infection and related complications.
