Andhra announces 10 percent stipend hike for MBBS, BDS interns, 5 percent for PG, MDS, DNB, super speciality students

Vijayawada: In a major relief to interns and junior doctors in Andhra Pradesh, the state government has hiked the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns by 10 percent, and 5 percent for PG degree and diploma, Super Speciality, MDS, and DNB students.

As per G.O.Ms.No. 141 issued by the Health, Medical & Family Welfare Department, the new rates will be applicable retrospectively from January 1, 2026.

As per media reports, under the revised rates, the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns in government medical colleges and hospitals across the state has been increased from Rs 25,906 to Rs 28,497.

For postgraduate MDS and DNB students, the first-year stipend has been increased from Rs 60,823 to Rs 63,864, while the second-year stipend has been increased from Rs 61,528 to Rs 64,604, and for the third-year students, the stipend has been increased from Rs 64,767 to Rs 68,005.

Meanwhile, Super Speciality students will receive Rs 84,525 in the first year, Rs 86,940 in the second year and Rs 89,355 in the third year, up from the existing Rs 80,500, Rs 82,800 and Rs 85,100, respectively. For PG Diploma students, the revised stipends have been fixed at Rs 63,864 for the first year and Rs 64,606 for the second year, against the current rates of Rs 60,823 and Rs 61,528.

According to TOI report, the government has also proposed an annual stipend increase of 3.5% across all medical courses from Jan 1, 2027, with similar annual revisions to continue thereafter.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that junior doctors in Andhra Pradesh had initiated a strike in August over demands for a stipend hike, an increase in retirement age and recruitment norms, but called it off following the intervention of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

Following the agitation by the Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors’ Association (APJUDA), a high-level meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Health and Medical Department Secretary G. Veerapandian to discuss the pending demands of junior doctors, including an increase in stipend, recruitment of non-medical faculty and retirement age.

TNIE reported that the committee later finalised its proposal in consultation with the Finance Department. Subsequently, the Director of Medical Education (DME) has been directed to take immediate steps to implement the revised stipend rates and disburse the increased amounts to eligible trainees.
