GMC Eluru renamed after Dr Yellapragada Subbarow
Andhra Pradesh- Recently, the Government Medical College (GMC), Eluru has been named after Dr Yellapragada Subbarow. On this, the state's Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan has expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for naming Eluru GMC after the famous scientist Dr Yellapragada Subbarow.
A week ago, Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Y Sathya Kumar announced that the Government Medical College, Eluru would be named after Dr. Yellapragada Subbarow. In this regard, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has approved a proposal to honour the memory and scientific contributions of world-renowned scientist Dr Subba Row.
On this, K Pawan Kalyan has expressed his gratitude to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and called the decision a fitting tribute to the scientist who has made significant contributions to medical science, including the discovery of medicines for cancer, tuberculosis and filariasis, report DeccanChronicle. K Pawan Kalyan was the person who proposed to change the name of Eluru Government College.
“I thank CM Naidu for this decision. Naming the medical college after Dr. Subbarow is a moment of great pride for our state," said Pawan Kalyan”. “Upon hearing the suggestion, CM Naidu responded positively, and in accordance with his direction, the State Minister for Medical and Health, Satyakumar Yadav, along with senior officials, finalized the name”, he added.
Furthermore, the Deputy Chief Minister also emphasised that this step will immortalize the contribution of Dr Subbarow in medical science and inspire future generations. He added, “By naming the college after Dr. Subbarow, who invented the first tetracycline antibiotic, our government has paid homage to his groundbreaking work”.
Dr Subba Row was a biochemist whose research helped save millions of lives across the world. He was born in 1895 in Bhimunipatnam, West Godavari and died in 1948. His pioneering research led to the creation of important antibiotics and several drugs such as heterogeneous and tetracycline. His discovery of the nature and properties of folic acid is acknowledged as a pioneering breakthrough.
