Gauhati Medical College Hospital secures NABH accreditation

Guwahati- Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Assam's largest government healthcare institution, has recently received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH), bringing all its departments, including radiology, in line with national quality standards for the first time.
The accreditation, granted by the Quality Council of India, remains valid until May 29, 2026. It follows a detailed two-day assessment conducted on February 15 and 16, with the hospital receiving the final certificate on June 24.
The accreditation is expected to make radiological services faster and more streamlined, thereby reducing waiting times and enabling patients to receive diagnostic reports more quickly.
Speaking to DailyHunt on Wednesday, Dr Achyut Chandra Baishya, Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of GMCH, said, "It is really good news for us. GMCH was already NABL-certified for pathology and microbiology, but radiology was not accredited”.
The step was taken following a directive from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, instructing all medical colleges in the state to obtain NABH and NABL certifications.
"Accordingly, we applied, and after the assessment in February, all departments of the medical college met the required standards and received accreditation," Dr Baishya added.
He also further added, “Now there will be minimal waiting time for radiological procedures. If a patient undergoes an MRI today, we will be able to provide the report the very next day”.
Dr Dipu Bhuiyan spearheaded the efforts to meet these standards; whose team undertook extensive work at the grassroots level to align every department of the hospital with the standards prior to the assessment.
The Chief Minister welcomed this certification and described it as part of the state's broader effort to standardise healthcare quality in Assam's government hospitals.
On this, Sarma shared a post on 'X' and wrote, "With the aim of providing uniform healthcare services across government hospitals in Assam, I had asked all medical colleges to obtain NABH accreditation. I am happy to share that GMCH, TMCH, AMCH, FAAMCH, and JMCH have achieved this so far."
