Bihar CM calls for CBI probe into Patna NEET aspirant's death case
Bihar: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has urged a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of a student preparing for the NEET in Patna.
This information was shared by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary through a written post on 'X'. Mr Choudhary wrote, "Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has requested the Government of India to hand over the investigation of the murder case of a NEET student in Patna (Case Number- 14/26) to the CBI. This incident should be thoroughly and transparently investigated."
Recently, the girl's parents met with Bihar's Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar at his residence and alleged that the police were trying to cover up the case by denying the sexual assault and portraying it as a suicide. There was high drama outside the DGP's house. Following this, this decision was made a day after the parents met with the DGP, report The Hindu.
In this case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed on January 16 at the orders of the state government, soon after the post-mortem report of the candidate came into the public domain on January 12. The report mentioned "injuries and signs of violence on the body" and also stated that "sexual violence cannot be ruled out".
On January 25, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Patna issued a press note stating that on January 10, 2026, the deceased girl's family had given the police some of her clothes, which were seized. As per legal procedure, these items were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination.
It further stated, "The FSL is preparing the DNA profile of the same. Accordingly, as part of the further investigation, the DNA will be matched with the DNA of the arrested accused as well as other suspected individuals identified by the SIT."
The 18-year-old student from Jehanabad was found unconscious in a private girls' hostel in Chitragupta Nagar, Patna, earlier this month. She died on January 11 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
On this, Medical Dialogues had reported that relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act have been invoked in this case.
So far, blood samples have been collected from the owner of the girls' hostel and others associated with the premises. Previously, samples were taken from 11 other people in Jehanabad, including five family members, i.e. her mother, father, two uncles, and brother, primarily to create reference profiles and rule out familial connections.
