Dr Dipak Dhar Choudhury elected IMA National President, Dr KM Abul Hasan named Honorary Secretary General
New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has announced its new leadership team, with Dr. Dipak Dhar Choudhury from Uttarakhand appointed as the National President for the 2026-27 term, while Dr K.M. Abul Hasan from Tamil Nadu has been named Honorary Secretary General of IMA HQS for the 2026-28 term. Dr Jayesh M Lele has been appointed National President for the 2027-28 term.
Dr. Dinesh Goel has been appointed Honorary Finance Secretary of IMA for the 2026-28 term.
Dr Dipak Choudhury completed his schooling in Silchar in 1969, and pursued his B.Sc. and MBBS from Gauhati University. In 1987, he opened a clinic in Raipur, Dehradun. He served as Lead Trainer of the National Family Welfare Programme, training more than 250 doctors and also worked as a Master Trainer of the National STI Programme.
He was also the State Coordinator of BPNI — the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India. Dr Choudhury is credited with laying the roots of the IMA Uttarakhand branch. He is also a Founder Life Member of the IMA Blood Bank Society, where he served as Honorary Joint Secretary 2008–2013, and has been Honorary Secretary since 2013.
Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Dipak Dhar Choudhury stated, “The small clinics are facing many problems to keep themselves afloat now-a-days. While applying the Clinical Establishment Act, we need to have better policy formation to ensure that small clinics can also survive. I also think there is a need for single-window registration for all health-related matters like Fire NOC, biomedical waste registration, and so on. It is almost impossible to keep track of all the different kinds of registrations required for this and run here and there.” He has also requested that proper steps should be taken to avoid violence against doctors.
Dr. K.M. Abul Hasan is an alumnus of Thanjavur Medical College, where he completed his MBBS, followed by an MS in General Surgery from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, and an M.Ch. - Pediatric Surgery from Madras Medical College. He currently serves as the Correspondent & Secretary of Erode City Central CBSE School, Chithode.
He also holds several key positions, including National Chairman of IMA HBI, Secretary of Saaliheen Educational and Charitable Trust, Managing Trustee of Dr KMA Educational and Social Welfare Trust, and member of IMA Employment and Career Facilitation Bureau.
In addition, he serves as Convenor of the Commonwealth Medical Association Youth Empowerment Initiative and the Chairman of the Legal Committee of IMA Tamil Nadu State 2026. He also holds the post of Director & Zonal Secretary of UEF Chamber of Commerce, President of IMAYAM Cancer Home, and of the Healthcare Panel, Olirum Erodu Foundation. He previously served as the President of the Indian Medical Association's Tamil Nadu chapter in 2024, and as the National Chairman of Junior Doctors Network, IMA HQ, 2022-24. He also served as the Chairperson of the Medical Students Network, IMA Tamil Nadu, from 2019 to 2022.
While discussing the glaring problems that doctors are facing now, Dr. K.M. Abul Hasan told Medical Dialogues, “Mixopathy is one of the worst problems that healthcare sectors are facing now-a-days. It is important to preserve the integrity and sanctity of each discipline of medicine, and mixing them together can be harmful. Another problem is the issue of compensation in negligence cases, where the court is even allowing compensation worth Lakhs and lakhs; the government should put some kind of cap on it or frame a proper policy for it. Violence against hospitals and doctors is another glaring problem in the medical sector. We should have a central law to avoid such cases of assault.”
