Fake Doctor booked for Rs 2 Crore Romance Scam Targeting More Than 500 Women
New Delhi: A 35-year-old cyber fraudster, who frequently posed as a doctor to gain the trust of unsuspecting victims, has been arrested by Delhi Police for allegedly cheating more than 500 women across the country of nearly Rs 2 crore through online romance scams.
The accused reportedly used emotional manipulation, false promises, and carefully crafted identities to lure women into his trap over an extended period.
Police said the accused operated extensively through dating apps, matrimonial platforms, and social media, where he created multiple fake profiles to target victims. While he portrayed himself in various professional roles such as a businessman, lawyer, or film producer, investigators noted that presenting himself as a doctor made his profile appear more credible and trustworthy, allowing him to build quicker and deeper connections,
According to officials, the accused would begin with casual and friendly conversations, gradually developing emotional relationships with women. Once he gained their confidence, he shifted communication to private platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. To avoid detection, he used multiple mobile numbers, fake identities, and frequently changed accounts, making it difficult for authorities to track his activities,

Once trust was established, he allegedly created false situations such as medical emergencies, financial losses, or urgent personal needs to seek money. In many cases, he also promised marriage or offered fake career opportunities, deepening the emotional involvement of victims.
In one such case, a woman lost around Rs 7 lakh after being contacted by a fake profile named “Vaibhav Arora.” The accused reportedly built a relationship with her, sought financial help, and later cut off communication, even spreading false information about his own death. Investigators also found that the accused resorted to blackmail in several instances. He allegedly persuaded victims to share private photos or videos and later threatened to make them public if they refused to pay additional money.
He was a resident of West Bengal and arrested from the North 24 Parganas area following technical surveillance and analysis of financial transactions. Police said he used multiple devices and SIM cards registered under different identities to carry out the fraud, reports ANI. During the operation, authorities recovered smartphones, SIM cards, debit cards, and gold jewellery allegedly purchased using the defrauded money. A portion of the funds was reportedly spent on online gaming and personal expenses.
Police believe the accused managed several fake profiles simultaneously and targeted women across different states. He is currently in custody, and further investigation is underway to identify more victims and trace the remaining financial trail.
