Illegal sex determination racket busted in Gurugram, doctor among 4 held
Gurugram: In an inter-state raid, a doctor among 4 others was arrested from Etah on Thursday on charges of illegal sex determination of the foetus by the Gurugram health department and Uttar Pradesh police in a joint operation.
The Gurgaon civil surgeon had got information about a nexus of people conducting illegal sex determination of foetus, following which the accused were nabbed in a joint operation, and a case was registered against the doctor and his three associates under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 and Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971 in Gurgaon.
The team recovered Rs 35,000 and an illegal ultrasound machine from their possession.
A health department official confirmed that they received a tip-off about a Gurugram's Devilal Nagar resident who allegedly used to assist the women from several districts to Delhi and Uttar Pradesh to abort female foetuses, which is a crime under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition Of Sex Selection) Act​ (PCPNDT).
According to the FIR filed in the matter, the accused took Rs 35,000 to Rs 45,000 each for conducting the illegal sex determination tests and abortion.
On Thursday, the health department came up with a plan to nab the accused in action and deployed a decoy pregnant woman who approached the man. The man allegedly received Rs 35,000 from the woman at Devilal Nagar and then took her to Etah where they allegedly met a doctor of a local hospital on Aligarh Road, reports Hindustan Times.
As per the officials, the doctor allegedly took around Rs 14,500 to carry out a sex determination test. He asked the man to take the woman to another clinic run by two other suspects who were identified as local residents by the officials. They conducted an ultrasound test which identified the foetus to be a female, added the official.
It was then the health team along with the local police arrived and arrested the offenders at the clinic. "Our team nabbed the four accused," Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer, Gurgaon told TOI.
As per the FIR status, two of the accused allegedly confessed that though they were conducting the ultrasound, they have no medical education or qualification to do so. Their clinic was not registered under PCPNDT Act, reports the daily.
Dr Virender Yadav, chief medical officer told Hindustan Times, "Illegal ultrasound machines have been recovered from the spot. The FIR was filed under several sections of the PCPNDT Act and Indian Medical Council Act late Thursday night after the Gurugram health teams along with the Etah police busted the nexus. In the last few months, several such raids have been conducted. It shows that a network exists in Delhi and UP for illegal abortions."
