Himachal Pradesh amends resident doctors policy to appoint PGI, AIIMS postgraduates

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has amended the Resident Doctors Policy-2025 to facilitate the appointment of eligible postgraduate (PG) doctors who have completed their postgraduate degrees from the PGI, Chandigarh, and AIIMS, New Delhi, officials said.
The appointments will be made against vacant Senior Residents/Tutor Specialists in the state's medical colleges under the 33.33 percent quota reserved for direct candidates.
A health department spokesperson said that, according to the notification issued by the Department of Medical Education, a new clause has been incorporated into the Resident Doctors Policy-2025. Under the new provision, eligible PG doctors from these two premier medical institutions will be appointed based on merit in MBBS and postgraduate examinations, without any written test or interview.
The spokesperson stated that the amendment reflects the government's initiative to facilitate the recruitment of qualified medical professionals in health institutions of the state. It would strengthen the availability of specialist medical services in Himachal Pradesh.
He further added that the Chief Minister was focused on strengthening government medical colleges, expanding opportunities for postgraduate medical education and improving the availability of specialised healthcare.
Last year, the state government notified a new Resident Doctor Policy 2025 for all the Government Medical Colleges/institutes across the State. Under this newly introduced policy, the state laid down the eligibility, selection, and appointment criteria, reservation roster, etc., to appoint senior and junior residents and tutors in the Department of Medical Education.
The State Government implemented the comprehensive Resident Doctors Policy 2025 to regulate the selection, appointment, and structural terms of senior/junior residents and tutor specialists across all government medical colleges.
Under the policy, direct appointments by college principals have been replaced. All appointments for senior/junior residents and tutors are conducted centrally by the Atal Medical University, Nerchowk (Mandi) via written examinations and counselling rounds.
