JnK FMG interns to now get Rs 12,300 monthly
Jammu: In a major relief for Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) pursuing internships, the Health and Medical Education Department of Jammu and Kashmir has approved a monthly stipend of Rs. 12,300 for FMGs interning at Government Medical Colleges across the Union Territory.
An order in this regard has been issued by the Health and Medical Education Department, Gov. of Jammu and Kashmir on 27th January 2025. “Sanction is hereby accorded to the grant of stipend in favour of Foreign Medical Graduates (MBBS), pursuing internships in Government Medical Colleges of Jammu and Kashmir for a period of one year @ Rs. 12300 per month. The stipend shall be paid to eligible FMG internees from the date of issuance of the order,” stated the order.
The order specifies that the stipend will be disbursed in accordance with the National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines and is contingent upon the availability of funds under the designated account head. Additionally, the department clarified that FMGs interning in private medical colleges within Jammu and Kashmir will have their stipends borne by the respective institutions.
This decision comes after persistent demands from FMG interns, who have been advocating for financial support during their internship period. Previously Medical Dialogues reported that the Jammu and Kashmir Medical Council asked the medical graduates from abroad to submit an affidavit stating that they would not demand any stipend during the internship period.
Though in April 2024, the Supreme Court said that the FMGs cannot be treated differently and should be paid stipends during their internship like their counterparts who have done MBBS from the Indian medical colleges, The Jammu Kashmir government issued the order in October 2024 declaring no stipend for FMGs. Nearly 350 FMGs were undergoing internships in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. They were accommodated by the Government through the allocation of necessary seats in the new medical colleges as a one-time measure. However, these interns did not receive any stipend.
