Jharkhand Govt launches screening for thalassemia, sickle cell and anaemia

Ranchi: The Jharkhand government has launched a statewide screening campaign for thalassemia, sickle cell disease and anaemia, aiming to address the long-standing gap in accurate health data for these serious conditions.

Health Minister Irfan Ansari said that, unlike most states, Jharkhand lacks clear district-wise information on the number of patients affected, which has hindered effective treatment and planning.

According to a UNI report, Ansari stated, “No district in Jharkhand has precise data on thalassemia and sickle cell patients. These are severe diseases, and treatment will be ensured within the state under all circumstances. Our goal is to make Jharkhand free from thalassemia and sickle cell disease.”

To address this, the government has approved screening across all districts. District blood banks are being upgraded with next-generation testing machines, advanced HIV screening tools and modern blood-safety technology to prevent incidents like those reported earlier in Chaibasa.

Preparations have also begun to establish a bone marrow transplant unit at Ranchi Sadar Hospital, with the state government set to cover the full treatment cost for patients.

The health department said that the statewide testing campaign will strengthen Jharkhand’s health database and ensure timely, high-quality treatment for children. Private hospitals are being encouraged to support the initiative, and efforts are underway to bring experienced doctors from other states, reports UNI.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that in a disturbing incident in Chaibasa, Jharkhand, five children with thalassemia had tested HIV-positive following blood transfusions. Chief Minister Hemant Soren ordered the suspension of the West Singhbhum civil surgeon, the medical officer in charge of the blood bank, and the technicians in connection with the case.

A high-level probe has also been initiated following the suspension of officials at the direction of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
