BBMP Proposes to start Medical College Amidst Financial Crunch
The civic body has prepared a comprehensive proposal seeking a fund allocation of Rs 500 crore in the upcoming state budget to materialize this ambitious project. Officials emphasized that the hospital, inaugurated in February 2013 at a cost of Rs 106 crore, boasts a 300-bed capacity and various services, including outpatient facilities, maternity care, and chemotherapy, which are set to commence shortly, reports the daily.
Nestled in a four-story building with a substantial 14,885 sqm built-up area, the hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art amenities, including laboratories, a radiology department, blood storage facilities, emergency care, pharmacy, maternity ward, pediatric care, chemotherapy, ophthalmology, orthopedics, dental care, and general ward facilities, apart from outpatient services.
Health authorities from BBMP disclosed that recent tenders have been floated to recruit qualified staff for the hospital, indicating a step forward in realizing their vision. According to the civic body, establishing a medical college within the hospital premises aligns with their objective of augmenting the number of medical seats available in the government quota. This proposed venture, if approved, would signify a significant stride for BBMP in contributing to medical education and healthcare services in Bengaluru.
Speaking to Times of India, one officer stated, “We’ll start necessary procedures and plan the project if the government allocates the funds.” BBMP currently manages a network of 35 hospitals, including maternity homes across the city, with three of them being recent additions. The proposal aims to upgrade 32 existing hospitals, incorporating state-of-the-art medical equipment and advanced operation theaters to enhance healthcare services. Addressing safety concerns, officials note that despite previous electrification efforts, new electrical wiring is deemed necessary to prevent untoward incidents.
