DIMHANS MD Psychiatry student commits suicide

Karnataka: In a tragic incident, a medical student of Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (DIMHANS) committed suicide by hanging herself in the hostel in Karnataka.
According to police sources, the deceased has been identified as a 25-year-old resident of Shivamogga. She was living in the hostel with her roommate. The student was found hanged on Wednesday morning when her roommate returned to the hostel.
Speaking to TOI, Dr Arunkumar C, Director of DIMHANS, said that she was pursuing a postgraduate degree in MD Psychiatry. She had been staying in the hostel for the past few days after getting admission on January 1st. When she lost interest in the psychiatry subject after joining the course, her parents came to the city to counsel her and encourage her to continue her studies.
"But we do not know what exactly transpired between them. We are shocked to know about her suicide. Her roommate alerted the college staff and police after seeing her body," he added.
Meanwhile, the student's mother, who is an anatomy professor, said that she had taken admission of her own free will and there was no pressure on her from the family.
"After getting admission, she told us that she was not interested in pursuing the course. As it is common for students to face such situations during the initial days of their PG, we thought she too was going through the same. We came to Dharwad and counselled her, saying things would be normal gradually. We went back to Shivamogga yesterday. But she ended her life by hanging the next morning”, her mother added. The family is devastated by the loss of their only daughter.
While, Inspector PR Gangenhalli of the Dharwad Sub-Urban Police Station, citing the victim girl's parents, said that she had lost interest in her course and took this step despite counseling from her parents. "We have registered a case and completed all the formalities, including the post-mortem examination”, the inspector further added.
