Mangalore: Dr P Raghu Ram, a renowned Surgeon, a Padma Shri awardee, Founding Director of KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases in Hyderabad, has been conferred the prestigious Distinguished Alumnus Award by Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangalore, as part of the institution's 70-year celebration.
Recalling his journey, Dr Raghu Ram shared, “In 1995, I completed my MS exam with first place. It has been 30 years since then, and KMC remains an integral part of my professional and personal identity.” He expressed heartfelt gratitude to his teachers and trainers, saying, “I have learned many things not only about surgery but about etiquette, bedside manner, and patient care in KMC. I owe it to my teachers and trainers.”
Dr Raghu Ram also recounted his subsequent achievements after leaving KMC, particularly his time in the United Kingdom. “I went to the UK to obtain FRCS and passed the FRCS within 45 days from the three Royal Colleges of the UK,” he said, underlining the strong foundation he received at KMC that helped propel his distinguished career.
The College Day and Awards Ceremony of Kasturba Medical College Mangalore was held on June 6, 2025, to celebrate academic excellence, research achievements, and alumni contributions. Dr. Raghu Ram, Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy Awardee, Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, was felicitated with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Raghu Ram, in his inspirational address, shared nine ‘sutras’—guiding life principles that have shaped his remarkable journey: trust and ethics, highlighting the nobility of medicine and prioritising patient welfare; communication skills; focus; hard work; honesty; transformative habits, including meditation; staying positive and manifesting dreams; and gratitude towards your parents and motherland. These principles deeply resonated with the audience, offering valuable life lessons for aspiring medical professionals.
