Medical Colleges to Reopen in Kerala from July 1
Thiruvananthapuram: As the second wave of the pandemic is gradually receding, Kerala is all set to reopen the medical colleges in the State.
In a recent press conference, Chief Minister of the State, Pinarayi Vijayan has clarified that the medical colleges in the State are going to reopen from July 1. This decision on the part of the Government has been taken as the medical students in the State have been duly vaccinated against the Covid-19.
These new relaxations have been announced by the Government on Tuesday and CM Vijayan, while addressing the press conference after a review meeting told that they would come into effect from Thursday.
After the onset of the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic, the educational institutes including the medical colleges all across the country were forced to be closed. In fact, Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that following an outbreak of Covid-19 in Kerala-based medical college hostel, the college authorities had issued directions to the students asking them to vacate the college hostel at the earliest.
However, the Chief Minister at the press conference on Tuesday said that the spread of the disease in the state is on the decline, adds PTI.
He said classes for medical students will start on July 1 as they have been vaccinated.
"The 18 to 23-year-olds will be treated as a special category for vaccination. This will enable the opening up of regular colleges for them", the Chief Minister further added.
He further informed that efforts are on to detect and study genetic variation of the coronavirus through continuous genetic sequencing. The study is led by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Biotechnology and Kozhikode Medical College.
In addition, the Institute of Genomics and Integrated Biology is conducting studies into this, said Vijayan.
He also announced that the Kerala State Pravasi Welfare Development Co-operative Society, in collaboration with HLL LifeCare Limited, is all set to launch COVIDP-19 Molecular Testing Laboratory at all four airports in the state to facilitate the travel of expatriates.
