Bhopal: Amid escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and the missile attacks, thousands of medical students are stranded in Iran, feeling helpless and surviving alone with their families here in India, praying for their safe return. While some have been evacuated, others are left in a foreign country, which is currently at war.

Like this, two medical students from Bhopal, currently studying in Iran, are stuck in the country as tensions rise and missile attacks continue. Their families back home are extremely worried and haven’t been able to sleep peacefully for days.

These two students are Areej Ehsan, a first-year MBBS student at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and Mohd Haris Khan, a fourth-year MBBS student at the same university.

The students, who were studying in Tehran, were moved to Qom - a city about 140 km away from the capital by the Indian Embassy on June 15. From there, they are now reportedly travelling by road to reach the Iran-Armenia border, a journey of nearly 1,100 km. They are hoping to catch a flight back to India from there.

On the night of April 13, the students woke up to explosions and fighter jets roaring overhead. They saw drones and missiles being intercepted and nearby buildings on fire.

Medical Officer Dr. Ehsan Azmi from Bhopal’s HSZG Government Unani Medical College said his daughter, Areej Ehsan, a first-year MBBS student at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, was unable to sleep due to the constant sounds of missiles and fighter aircraft.

"He has not been able to talk to her for two days as she has switched off her phone to save battery. From Qom, the students have been moved to an undisclosed location. They will probably travel by road to the Armenian border and then fly home,” he told Free Press Journal, hoping for her return in the next 3-4 days.

Dr. Azmi said, "The Indian Embassy and the Iran-based Indian Medical Students’ Association have played a key role in the evacuation. I emailed the Iranian Embassy in India, the Indian Embassy in Iran and the Ministry of External Affairs for safe evacuation,” he said, adding his family is praying for Areej’s safe return.

Similarly, Dr. Shahid Khan, medical officer at Unani Shifakhana, Bhopal, said his son Mohd Haris Khan, a fourth-year MBBS student at the same university, was terrified and panicky. “When missiles fly over your head, panic is natural,” he said.

He said "students had food, waterand decent accommodation at Qom. The students are worried about their safety and future career. They have been advised not to share photos or locations for security reasons. What can we do? We can only pray for his safe return."

Medical Dialogues recently reported that 126 students from Karnataka stranded in Iran were evacuated and brought to Turkmenistan. The 126 people were divided into two batches; the first batch had already landed in Bengaluru on Thursday, and the second arrived on Friday. The move was made after a forum was written to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Tehran, urging them to take immediate steps to evacuate the stranded people to safe places and bring them back to Karnataka.

On this, the Indian government launched an Operation called “Sindhu” to evacuate Indians from Iran and Israel; therefore, Indians started arriving in India from Thursday morning.

Ghaziabad student struck in Tehran

The family of a medical student from Ghaziabad, currently stranded in war-torn Iran, on June 16 has appealed to the Indian government to ensure his safe return.

Rizwan Ansari, a resident of Behta Hajipur in Ghaziabad's Loni, is pursuing an MBBS degree in Tehran and was living in a university hostel that was recently destroyed in a missile strike amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran.

According to his family, Rizwan narrowly escaped the attack. He had gone to a nearby hotel with friends for a meal when the missile hit the hostel building. Upon returning, he found the building reduced to rubble. He then called his family using someone else’s phone to inform them he was safe.

Speaking to IANS, Rizwan’s mother, Yaman Rani, made an emotional appeal to the Prime Minister.

"My son wanted to become a good doctor, which is why he went to Tehran to study. I request Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through your platform, to bring my son back to India. He told us his hostel building had collapsed and everything he owned was destroyed. From childhood, he dreamed of becoming either a scientist or a highly qualified doctor."

His father, Mohammad Ali, added: "Rizwan went to Iran in November last year. He has been very disturbed since Sunday, as missiles have been landing near his area. He went out to eat at a hotel, and when he returned, the building was gone. He told me there were bodies lying around his building. He said, ‘I am alive only because I was outside.’ I urge the Indian government to bring my son and all Indian students in Iran back safely."

Ghulam Abbas, Rizwan’s maternal uncle, said: "This is his first year in Iran. He told us Israel is continuously launching missiles. When he didn’t step out for 24 hours, we told him to go and get something to eat. His mobile phone, tablet - everything is gone in the collapse. We are requesting the government to rescue him and others stuck there."

The situation in the region continues to deteriorate, with families like Ansari’s anxiously awaiting government intervention.
