Nagpur: In a bid to address the acute shortage of teaching staff in government medical colleges across Maharashtra, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) has launched an extensive recruitment campaign to fill 792 faculty positions, along with 10 dean posts.
This move comes amid growing concerns over the absence of regular or full-time faculty, particularly in the newer medical colleges, forcing the DMER to pay repeated penalties to the National Medical Commission (NMC) to retain its sanctioned MBBS seat capacity.
According to the daily, the recruitment process, which includes Class II appointments for assistant professors in key disciplines such as anesthesiology (67), radiology (78), anatomy (46), general medicine (50), ophthalmology (26), obstetrics and gynaecology (83), microbiology (23), forensic medicine (29), pathology (48), community medicine (31), and general surgery (64), is being conducted through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC).
"Recruitment is being done through MPSC. The application process stretches until late May. Then the final shortlisting and selection process will take another four months. So, this has come late," one of the officials told Times of India. GMC officials said the drive might not help avoid penalties levied by the NMC over the staff crunch this year, too. However, with the application window open until late May and the subsequent selection process expected to span another four months, officials acknowledge that the initiative may have come too late to make a significant difference for this academic year.
At least 10 medical colleges in regions like Vidarbha, including institutions in Akola, Chandrapur, and Gondia, have been particularly affected, with longstanding faculty shortages prompting the DMER to reshuffle senior faculty members or assign a single faculty member to multiple colleges during NMC inspections. Last year, the NMC conditionally renewed MBBS seats for the 2024-25 academic session after the DMER agreed to pay fines related to insufficient teaching staff, and authorities fear a similar scenario may unfold again this year despite the current recruitment efforts.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that after the National Medical Commission's (NMC) rejection to approve the proposed government medical colleges in Maharashtra, the State Government was ramping up the manpower as it is planning to appeal before the Commission in this regard. The Department was planning to fill up the faculty positions on a contractual basis and aimed to fill up at least 30% of the 800 pending positions of Assistant Professors, 167 positions of Associate Professors, and 400 positions of Professors.
