Maha approves Rs 300 crore high-energy medical cyclotron facility in Nagpur

Nagpur- The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday approved the establishment of a High-Energy Medical Cyclotron Project (HEMCP) in Nagpur to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.
The state government has earmarked Rs 300 crore for the project, out of which ₹150 crore will be provided by the Medical Education Department. The project will be implemented through “Mahacare”. Additionally, a separate subsidiary will be formed to manage it.
For this, approximately thirty hectares of land at Bhansoli (Kinhi) in Hingna Taluka have been approved. However, the decision regarding funds for land, construction, and machinery will be taken after the project report is prepared.
A 50:50 cost-sharing ratio between the Medical Education Department and the Industry Department has been approved. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will be set up under the Companies Act, 2013, for implementation.
The project is expected to benefit patients across several cities in Central India and holds the potential to develop Nagpur into a radio-pharmaceutical innovation hub, thereby enabling greater precision in medical treatment.
The primary objective of this project is to ensure the local availability of radioisotopes used in PET-CT and nuclear medicine services to tackle the rising number of cancer cases.
According to the TNIE report, an official from the Department of Medical Education and Drugs stated that due to its central geographical location, patients within a 500-kilometre radius, covering Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh, will benefit from it.
For this project, the Medical Education Commissioner will serve as the Chairman, and the Development Commissioner of the Industries Department will be the Co-Chairman. The Steering Committee includes Dr Shrikar Pardeshi (Principal Secretary to the CM) as Chairman and Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar as Member Secretary.
The presence of AIIMS, the National Cancer Institute, and the Government Medical College makes Nagpur an ideal hub, thereby reducing dependence on Mumbai and Hyderabad.
