Maha: Doctor serving till eighth month of pregnancy dies due to COVID after delivering stillborn

Maharashtra: A 33-year-old Medical Officer attached to Irwin Hospital, who extended services till the eighth month of her pregnancy succumbed to Coivd-19, five days after giving birth to a stillborn baby.

The deceased doctor has been identified as a pathologist, Pratiksha Gavali, who was serving as the Medical Officer at Amravati in Irwin Hospital.

According to a recent media report, the doctor was performing her duties amidst COVID till the eighth month of her pregnancy. Earlier this month, she fell ill and underwent a COVID test. She was found COVID positive and was undergoing treatment in Amravati for the same.

However, complications emerged due to her pregnancy and she was transferred to a hospital in Nagpur about 12 days ago.

She underwent an operation for the delivery lately but gave birth to a stillborn baby. Even before the griefing family members could mourn the loss, the doctor eventually passed away after her condition started to decline post-delivery.

Commenting on the incident, Amravati civil surgeon told The Indian Express that she was a dedicated doctor and though several doctors told her to take days off, she voluntarily joined her work so that she can contribute to the treatment especially during the scarcity of health workers.

He further added that "We had asked her to go on leave. She did remain at home after about five months of her pregnancy but later returned to duty on her own. We had put her on duty in the non-COVID section. On August 29, she started feeling unwell. So she got herself tested and was found to be Corona positive. She was admitted to a local hospital but after four days, she was shifted to a private hospital in Nagpur, where she died."

Expressing on the loss, the doctor's brother, Tyag Raj Waldekara, told the daily that "My sister had volunteered to work despite her advanced pregnancy but unfortunately we lost her to Corona. Before her death, she had a stillborn baby. We would like to appeal to people to keep themselves safe by observing social distancing and wearing masks."
