Maharashtra to get medical service commission to fill vacant posts at Government Medical Colleges

Mumbai: In order to streamline the process of appointments to vacant posts in government medical colleges, the state government is considering establishing a Maharashtra Medical Service Commission, said Medical Education minister Girish Mahajan.
The minister, who was responding to a question in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, said the state has 22 government medical colleges.
Of the 490 sanctioned posts of professors, 322 have been filled, while 920 of the 1,126 sanctioned posts for associate professors have been filled, he said, adding that the state has 1,765 assistant professors and 941 are vacant.
The minister told the house while replying to a question in the Legislative Council regarding filling vacancies in Government medical colleges, "We are contemplating establishing a Maharashtra Medical Service Commission to fill vacant posts,".
After communication with the Maharashtra Public Service Commission, the minister said he has informed the filling of vacancies will be expedited by August 30.
Mahajan told the Indian Express, "Even though MPSC has assured that vacant positions will be filled soon, the turnaround time for an appointment via MPSC is one or two years. To streamline this process, there is a plan to set up Maharashtra Medical Service Commission and fill all vacant positions."
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Maharashtra government had decided to set up new medical colleges in 12 districts by taking a loan of Rs 4000 crore from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The decision was taken during the meeting of the Medical Education department called by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, which was also attended by the representatives of the ADB.
There are around 12 districts in the state including, Jalgaon, Satara, Alibaug, Sindhudurg, Usmanabad, Parbhani, Amravati, Ratnagiri, Gadhchiroli, Bhandara, and Ambernath, which don't have a medical college.
