Mumbai police reuinite homeopathy student with family after finding him begging on street

Mumbai: A routine drive launched by the police to rehabilitate beggars from the streets took an extraordinary turn when a destitute pavement-dweller turned out to be a former homeopathy student who had become separated from his family during a mental health crisis.
Police officials located the family of the young man in Nanded, resulting in an emotional reunion late at night at the Malad Police Station.
According to the TOI media news report, this chain of events began on Thursday, when a police team was rounding up beggars from SV Road in Malad. During this process, Constable Komalsingh Jadhav spotted a young man, approximately twenty years old, on the footpath.
He asked him a few basic questions, to which the young man could neither provide an answer nor speak coherently. Sensing that the youth was in distress, Jadhav brought him to the police station.
After bringing him to the police station, he was bathed in warm water and given a hot meal. Once he began to feel at ease and had calmed down, Sub-Inspector Manisha Kagalkar gently began to question him about his past.
The young man mentioned his name and stated that he is a third-year homoeopathy student hailing from Tamsa in the Nanded district. Earlier this year, he was travelling by train when his bag was stolen.
He arrived in Mumbai without a single penny. Grappling with a pre-existing mental health condition and unable to recall his family's phone number, he eventually began begging to survive.
Based on this information, Sub-Inspector Kagalkar, working under the supervision of Senior Inspector Dushyant Chavan and DCP Sandeep Ghuge, immediately contacted the Tamsa Police Station.
The Tamsa police confirmed that a missing person complaint regarding a young man bearing a resemblance to the student had already been registered. The police provided his father's contact number, following which Kagalkar spoke with him over the phone.
He stated that the student was undergoing treatment for a mental health issue in Nanded. Approximately a month and a half ago, he left home without informing anyone, following which his family members began a frantic search for him.
Following a quick exchange of photographs with the police for verification, his family immediately left for Mumbai.
