Nagpur private lab slapped Rs 25000 for dumping biomedical waste
Nagpur: A private Pathology Laboratory has been fined Rs 25000 for unscientific disposal of bio-medical waste after it came under the radar of Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) nuisance detection squad (NDS).
As per a recent media report by TOI, a private facility, M/s Tayde Path Lab situated on Central Avenue near Indira Gandhi Government Medical College failed to adhere to the rules regarding the safe disposal of bio-medical waste.
This came after the nuisance detection squad team received a tip regarding the misconduct of the facility. The civic body has a set of rules regarding the disposal of bio-medical waste. The officials from Dharampeth zone imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on the private lab located on Munje Marg after disregarding the civic body's official orders as they kept on throwing the garbage at a nearby open area.
The Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 provides the regulatory framework for the management of bio-medical waste generated in the country. The rules clearly state that untreated bio-medical waste should not be mixed with other wastes and must be segregated into containers or bags at the point of generation. Further, the rule states that the waste has to be transported in specific vehicles to any off-site bio-medical waste treatment facility.
In July, a Nagpur-based private hospital was charged with a fine of Rs 50,000 for mixing biomedical waste with the normal waste package to a worker associated with a waste operating company, in violation of the biomedical waste management rules. The incident came to light when an official associated with the nuisance detection squad (NDS) detected the waste during the routine inspection of the vehicles entering the area.
Many innovative systems are being introduced to ensure proper handling of biomedical waste; for example, an initiative to install an incinerator at Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) was taken for the scientific disposal of biomedical waste released from the hospital a few days ago.
