Shillong Medical College to commence this academic session, Tura Medical College next year
Meghalaya- After a long wait, finally, Shillong Medical College is soon going to start its academic session for 2025-26 and Tura Medical College academic session from next year. This was stated by the Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh recently.
In this regard, a review meeting was held recently under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on the progress of preparations for the inauguration of medical colleges at both Shillong and Tura.
Speaking to the HubNews Media News Report, the Health Minister said “We were informed that everything is on schedule and that all of the infrastructure that needed to be put in position were all in an advanced stage and funding and other matters for the conduct and management of the medical college was also clearly explained to us in the meeting chaired by the chief minister”.
Meanwhile, the National Medical Council (NMC) is going to inspect Shillong Medical College soon. The inspection is expected to take place in early May.
On this, Ampareen said “We are hopeful that the entire procedure for the passing and approval of a government medical college run by the state government will be very highly expected. We hope that we will be able to commence one this session of 2025-26”.
Further, talking about the progress of Tura Medical College, Lingdoh added, “At the moment, we are ensuring that funding for the improvement of infrastructure of Tura Civil Hospital and Tura MCH Hospital is also expedited”.
She said, “We are happy to inform that all of these funding have been reviewed by the Chief Minister and have all been duly accorded. So that also is good news for all of us in the state because there is a high probability, we are targeting ourselves and pushing ourselves to ensure that the Tura Medical College also becomes operationalised by the next academic session”.
Along with this, the government is also deciding on the operations to run the Tura Medical College, on this Ampareen said, “The biggest concern of the government in the review of the Chief Minister is that the management of the civil hospital and MCH Tura should not be given to any institute if and when decided to run the Tura medical college. That is again good because ownership, management of the Tura civil hospital and MCH hospital remains with the government of Meghalaya”.
“We are in the process of preparing the Expression of Interests (EOIs) and it will take some time but we hope to be able to cross that bridge to enable even the Tura Medical college to start quickly as early as the next academic session,” she further added.
