Only 51 of 183 Faculty Posts Filled at AIIMS Madurai: MoS Health informs Lok Sabha
Madurai: The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai is facing a severe shortage of medical professionals, with only 51 faculty currently employed out of the sanctioned 183 positions. The situation is even more critical for non-faculty healthcare staff, with just 42 employees hired for the 911-sanctioned posts, informed Shri Pratap Rao Jadhav.
Shri Pratap Rao Jadhav, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was responding to questions posed by Smt Manju Sharma during a Lok Sabha session and he enquired about the actual number of doctors, nurses, paramedical staff, and other employees in comparison to the sanctioned staff working in All India Institutes of Medical Science (AIIMS) in the country including AIIMS Jodhpur. He also asked whether all the AIIMS in the country are functioning at their full capacity despite the shortage of human resources.
The minister added, “Recruitment of Faculty and Non-Faculty in various AIIMS is a continuous process. In addition to AIIMS New Delhi, 6 AIIMS set up under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), viz AIIMS at Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Raipur, Patna and Rishikesh are fully functional and the remaining AIIMS are at various stages of operationalisation.”
The minister also gave the details of the sanctioned strength, Faculty, Non-Faculty (including SR/JR, Nurses, Paramedical, and other staff), and those in positions in AIIMS. Out of the newly sanctioned 1235 seats, only 810 have been occupied in New Delhi. Out of the 305 seats in Bhopal, Jodhpur, Raipur, Patna, and Rishikesh, 231, 221, 178, 225, and 217 recruitments have been made.
In Nagpur, 224 faculty members are currently employed against 298 sanctioned posts. In Gorakhpur, 122 faculty members are working for 183 posts, while in Bhatinda, 140 are employed for 209 seats, and in Bilaspur, 106 are recruited for 217 sanctioned positions. The situation is more concerning in Madurai, where only 51 faculty members have been appointed out of 183 vacancies.
Similarly, Guwahati, Deoghar, Bibinagar, Rajkot, and Jammu, each have 183 sanctioned faculty positions. However, the number of recruited faculty members stands at 105, 120, 114, 67, and 106, respectively.
The shortage extends to non-faculty positions as well. In New Delhi, the largest gap exists, with 12,101 healthcare staff employed against 14,343 sanctioned posts. On the other end of the spectrum, Madurai has the lowest number of non-faculty staff, with just 42 employees out of the 911-sanctioned positions.
