Tamil Nadu urges Centre to scrap NEET, restore MBBS admissions based on Class 12 marks

Chennai: Renewing its long-standing opposition to the NEET, the Tamil Nadu Government has recently urged the Centre to abolish the national medical entrance examination and restore MBBS admissions based on Class 12th board examination marks.

Presenting the State Budget in the Assembly, Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson said repeated allegations of irregularities and question paper leaks in NEET have undermined the credibility of the examination and adversely affected the higher education prospects of students. He urged the Union Government to immediately discontinue the NEET-based admission system and reinstate the earlier merit-based admission process based on Plus-2 public examination scores.

According to UNI report, expressing its strong opposition, the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday urged the central governement to cancel NEET exams and revert back to UG medical admissions based on marks secured in Plus-2 board exams.

"The Government of Tamil Nadu therefore urges the union Government to immediately cancel the NEET examination system and revert to medical education admissions based on the earlier system of Class XII public examination marks", he said.

Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that The Tamil Nadu Selection Committee clarified that it will continue with its existing state counselling process for MBBS and BDS admissions for the 2026-27 academic year, despite recent changes introduced by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for All India Quota (AIQ) counselling.

In an attention notice issued on August 3, 2026, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER), Chennai, said the state counselling process will remain unchanged for the current admission cycle and will continue to follow the provisions already mentioned in the Tamil Nadu prospectus and relevant government orders.

The clarification comes after MCC introduced several changes to its AIQ counselling process for 2026-27. These include categorising candidates into "Freeze" (no upgradation) and "Float" (willing to upgrade) options, online document verification for Float candidates without initial physical reporting, and a digital seat resignation system through the MCC portal.
