TN DME launches online portal for FMG internship vacancies
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and Research launched a web portal to allow foreign medical graduates (FMGs) to view vacant internship positions in government and private medical colleges.
Through the portal, students can apply directly online and also receive their allotment orders.
FMGs must go through CRMI to obtain permanent registration in India. To do their internship in TN-based medical institutes, they must visit the DME office in Chennai and submit the required documents within the stipulated timeframe. This created difficulties for those coming from distant districts. Therefore, they requested that this process be made online.
This portal has been launched to ease the difficulties faced by students in finding vacancies for their Compulsory Rotatory Medical Internship (CRMI) training, said TN Health Minister Ma. Subramanian.
According to The Hindu Media news report, after launching the portal, the Health Minister said that earlier foreign medical students had to pay ₹3 lakh to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University for internship training in medical colleges in the state. Students had to visit numerous offices to apply for any vacancy available for internships. After the DMK government came to power, these fees were waived, and they were also given a stipend of ₹25,000 per month during their internships.
The Tamil Nadu Medical Students Association - Foreign Wing thanked the minister for fulfilling their demand to make the internship application process online. They also welcomed the launch of the portal, as it will transparently publish the number of available vacancies.
Meanwhile, Mr Subramaniam handed over appointment orders to 668 nurses who had worked during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the last batch of nurses to receive appointment orders.
To ensure that no nurse working during COVID-19 is left out, they were given special marks and posted in 708 Urban Health and Wellness Centres, 50 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Urban PHCs.
