Telangana to expedite appointment of regular DME
Hyderabad: The state government is set to accelerate the appointment of a regular Director of Medical Education (DME) through the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) shortly. This decision comes as the seniority list and any disciplinary cases are currently under review by the DPC.
Officials have indicated that the process will be fast-tracked following the conclusion of the ongoing Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the House of Parliament 2024 elections.
Since the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, only one DME post has been allocated to the state. However, the creation of a similar post for Telangana has been pending since then. Until 2018, an ad hoc system of in-charge arrangements was adopted for the DME post, with Dr K Ramesh Reddy serving as the in-charge. However, considering that he was a junior in the same feeder category, his seniors petitioned the Telangana High Court in a writ suit, following the High Court's instructions to set up a regular DME post. The post was approved in 2023, nearly nine years after the State was formed, reports Hans India.
The appointment to the DME post must now be made through a regular DPC, which was not established previously. The formation of the DPC occurred on February 2, 2024. However, the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct for Lok Sabha elections on March 16 temporarily halted the process. Subsequently, proposals and seniority lists were submitted by the DME on March 23.
During the interim period, the Congress government made in-charge arrangements for the DME post, based on the seniority list and with the approval of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. However, these arrangements were challenged in the High Court, disputing both seniority and disciplinary matters.
The expediting of the appointment process seeks to resolve the longstanding issue of leadership in the medical education department, ensuring stability and efficiency in the management of healthcare education in the state.
