AIIMS Gorakhpur suspends 12 medicos over alleged clash with police

Gorakhpur: Altogether 12 medicos, including six interns, have been suspended by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)), Gorakhpur, after allegedly clashing with two police constables who intervened in their physical altercation with medical students near a hotel.
Of the 12 medicos, eight have been suspended for 30 days, while the remaining four have been suspended for 10 days following an internal inquiry into the incident.
Meanwhile, the police told the Hindustan Times that during the altercation, some students reportedly attacked the police personnel with helmets and the scene was caught in CCTV.
The incident took place late on September 19, when a group of MBBS students from AIIMS Gorakhpur attended a birthday party at a hotel near Padaleganj. Soon, an argument broke out among some students after the party and allegedly escalated into a physical fight.
Around 1.30 am, two constables from Cantt police station, who were passing through the area in civil clothes, intervened to control the situation. However, they were allegedly hit during the confrontation.
Subsequently, additional police personnel were called to the spot, and eight students were taken into custody and brought to Cantt police station. Later, they were granted bail by the city magistrate's court.
After registering a case, the police examined CCTV footage from cameras installed near the scene and some students were allegedly seen attacking police personnel with helmets.
Following the incident, the AIIMS administration ordered an internal inquiry into the alleged misconduct. The suspension orders were issued after the committee submitted its findings.
The institute also tightened hostel monitoring arrangements after the incident. Students were instructed to mark their attendance with their wardens between 10 pm and 11 pm. They were prohibited from leaving the hostel after 11 pm without prior permission.
Meanwhile, the parents of the students concerned were also called to the institute and informed about the disciplinary action.
Commenting on this, AIIMS media cell in-charge Dr Aroop Kumar Singh said "The action was taken on the basis of a report submitted by an inquiry committee constituted by the institute administration."
AIIMS executive director Dr Vibha Dutta told HT, "The incident had been taken seriously and that necessary measures were being introduced to maintain discipline and ensure student safety on the campus."
