UP cabinet clears ESI hospital transfer in Kanpur for new ESIC medical college with 50 MBBS seats

Lucknow: The UP Cabinet has recently approved the proposal to transfer the state-run Employees State Insurance (ESI) Hospital located at Pandu Nagar in Kanpur to the Central government, to develop it as a medical college and super-speciality hospital.
In return, the Cabinet took over the ESIC-run hospital located at Jajmau.
According to the proposal, 50% of MBBS seats across India will be reserved for the children of ESI beneficiaries. The remaining seats will be distributed between the State and Central governments, with Uttar Pradesh receiving 35% and the Centre receiving 15% of the seats.
The objective of this step is to strengthen the tertiary healthcare facilities available to insured workers and their families, while simultaneously expanding the medical education infrastructure in the state.
According to the TOI media news report, under the approved plan, the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) will establish a medical college at the Pandu Nagar campus at an estimated cost of approximately ₹700 crore.
This institute will initially offer 50 MBBS seats, and there is a proposal to increase the number of these seats to 100 in the coming years.
This project will also include a 300-bed teaching hospital. According to government estimates, this institution could generate approximately 660 jobs for doctors, administrative officers, and nursing and paramedical staff; additionally, 203 outsourced positions will be available in security and housekeeping services.
Meanwhile, officials stated that this institute in Kanpur will become the third ESIC medical college in Uttar Pradesh, following those in Varanasi and Greater Noida, thereby expanding people's access to specialised healthcare services and medical education within the state.
