Woman alleges COVID vaccine blinded husband: Allahabad HC asks DM if he can be compensated
Allahabad: The District Magistrate of Baduan, Uttar Pradesh has been directed by the Allahabad High Court to decide on whether a government employee who claimed to have lost vision in both eyes after being vaccinated for Covid-19 is eligible for compensation in accordance with the law.
This came after the wife of the man approached the court demanding compensation, alleging that her husband went blind permanently as a side effect of the vaccine. The petitioner sought to issue direction to the State to decide and consider her representation.
The petitioner told The Indian Express that her husband "lost vision soon after getting the vaccine for Covid-19 on February 12", and alleged that officials failed to act on her complaint which prompted her to seek the intervention of the court.
The petitioner submitted that on 12th February her husband was administered the covid vaccine on the tehsil premises in a camp organized by the administration. He was administered his first dose of Covishield but ever since he got his first dose his health condition deteriorated. He came back home with a high fever and was also suffering from a headache as his eyes turned red.
"We thought that the redness in the eyes must be due to the fever. Then after four days, his fever did not go and he started vomiting. His headache was also persistent and despite taking heavy doses of paracetamol, the fever and headache stayed. Then, his vision became blurry and we took an eyedrop from a local chemist and used that. But there was no relief and seven days after getting the vaccine, he started discharging pus from his eyes," said the petitioner.
The petitioner also claimed that he had no comorbidities or any history of eye complications.
Taking note of the consistent eye problem, the petitioner took her husband to a doctor in Budaun district for treatment but after one week of treatment, he referred the patient to AIIMS.
The petitioner further informed the daily, "But instead, we went to Bareilly district, which is close, and consulted a private doctor. The Bareilly doctor said the infection happened due to the vaccine and referred him to AIIMS or Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh. Then, we went to Aligarh, where the doctors said he should be taken to AIIMS. The doctors at AIIMS tried to treat his eyes, but then gave up and said his eyesight will not return."
After the shocking revelation, the petitioner approached the high court to claim compensation as his husband allegedly lost his eyesight due to the vaccine.
Deliberating the submission, the Allahabad High Court directed the District Magistrate (DM) to decide whether as a government employee the man is eligible for compensation as he claimed that he lost vision in both eyes after being vaccinated for Covid-19.
Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi on Monday disposed of the writ petition filed by the wife observing,
"Considering the facts and circumstances of the case, without expressing any opinion on the merits of the issue and with the consent, the writ petition stands disposed of with observation that in case the petitioner makes fresh representation along with all relevant medical reports to the District Magistrate, Budaun ventilating his grievances within one week, the authority would decide the same in accordance with law expeditiously."
