Dehradun: The Uttarakhand government has approved a proposal to increase the monthly stipend of MBBS interns in five government medical colleges from Rs 17,000 to Rs 25,000.

Following the approval, the interns at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital have called off their indefinite strike that started on September 7, 2026.

The decision to revise the stipend at five medical colleges was taken during a state Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Friday.

The five medical colleges include Government Medical College, Haldwani; Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Government Institute of Medical and Research, Srinagar; Government Doon Medical College, Dehradun; Soban Singh Jeena Government Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Almora; and Government Medical College Haridwar.

Confirming this, DG Information Bansidhar Tiwari told TOI, "At present, five govt medical colleges are functioning in the state at Srinagar, Haldwani, Dehradun, Haridwar and Almora, in which MBBS and PG courses are being held. The state is committed to making health facilities available to every person in the remote and inaccessible areas of the state."

However, with no decision on a hike in the stipend of postgraduate doctors, PG doctors have continued their protest within the hospital premises.

No hike yet for resident doctors

Medical Dialogues had reported that the resident doctors currently receive between Rs 69,820 and Rs 71,257 per month and have demanded Rs 90,000 and upwards, depending on the year, for PG doctors, and Rs 1 lakh for senior resident doctors.

The resident doctors have been demanding a stipend increase claiming that their current stipend is extremely low considering their responsibilities, workload and long duty hours and that they are not seeking any special facilities but fair remuneration.

While the government has approved the stipend hike for interns, a decision on increasing the stipend for resident doctors has not yet been taken, prompting them to continue their indefinite strike.

In a post on the social media platform X, Uttarakhand Resident Doctors United appreciated the government's decision for interns but questioned why a similar decision had not been taken for resident doctors.

The association stated in the post that resident doctors who manage 24×7 emergency services, ICUs and wards while receiving a low stipend were being subjected to “outright injustice.” It added that the state's healthcare system cannot run on partial solutions.

"We make a strong appeal to the Union Health Minister Shri @JPNadda ji and Chief Minister @pushkardhami ji: All residents of Dehradun, Haldwani, Srinagar, and Almora are on strike. Please take immediate cognizance of this serious anomaly. Issue the official government order (GO) for the revision of PG residents' stipend without delay and deliver justice," the doctors said in the post.

"As our statewide indefinite strike enters Day 5, resident doctors across all government medical colleges, Haldwani, Srinagar, and Almora have been compelled to take the sternest step: A COMPLETE SHUTDOWN OF ALL OPD SERVICES. Despite continuous representations, the Government of Uttarakhand has maintained an indifferent silence toward PG resident doctors. Let the administration hear this loud and clear: We will NOT step back or resume routine duties until an official Government Order (GO) for stipend parity is formally issued and in our hands. We extend our deepest gratitude to medical associations, RDAs, and resident doctors across India who have amplified our struggle nationwide.... We urge Hon'ble CM Shri @pushkardhami ji & @ukcmo to break their silence and resolve this crisis immediately before patient healthcare suffers any further," another post by the doctors read.
