After bathing in the water, she climbed a rock and started taking selfies when she slipped and fell into the spring, Rajpur SHO Jitendra Chauhan said. She was swept away by the strong currents of the spring, which was in spate following heavy rain, the officer told PTI.
Police and State Disaster Response Force personnel rushed to the spot and pulled her out around two kilometres from where she had slipped, he added.
The unconscious girl was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her dead. Her body was handed over to her parents after a post-mortem on Monday, Mr Chauhan said.
As per a media report in Amar Ujala, the incident took place in the evening when the girl reached Dehradun with her friend. At around 2.30 pm, the student and her friend reached Sahasradhara after renting a scooter. After they reached the spot, both were taking a bath at the upper end of the Sahasradhara. However, when the girl tried to take a selfie by standing on a stone, her feet slipped and she was swept away in the river.
Her parents live in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district.
