Calcutta Medical College Intern held for alleged sexually assault

Kolkata: A 24-year-old medical intern from Calcutta Medical College and Hospital has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting his girlfriend and forcing her to undergo abortions without her consent or knowledge.
The accused, a resident of Malda, was taken into custody by the Patuli Women Police Station after a 27-year-old woman filed a formal complaint. The woman, who lives outside Kolkata and is not from the medical field, claimed that the accused, her boyfriend, engaged in sexual relations with her and secretly made her undergo three abortions.

As per a TOI news report, the accused was staying in the New Boys Hostel (GTD) of the medical college and has been sent to judicial custody. Police are also looking into whether he misused his medical training to carry out the alleged forced abortions.
According to police, the couple met in 2022 and were in a relationship. The woman became pregnant three times - once in 2022 and twice in 2024. She alleged that each time, the accused had allegedly given her pills for the abortion without properly informing her or obtaining her consent.
Following this, she filed a complaint at the police station, and later, the police registered a case under sections 69/89 of the BNS Act, pertaining to sexual intercourse by employing deceitful means and causing miscarriage without the woman's consent. If convicted, the accused intern can face 10 years in prison.
An officer told the daily, "The woman's statement was recorded under Section 183 of the BNSS. We conducted primary and medico-legal examinations of the woman. Witnesses were examined and relevant documents seized. We are carrying out a detailed investigation."
Medical Dialogues earlier reported that the Mangaluru police have arrested a postgraduate medical student for making a fake bomb threat call to a private hospital. It has been reported that to avoid giving a seminar presentation, a postgraduate medical student from Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences, Deralakatte, allegedly made hoax bomb threat calls to her own college on that day. This landed her in police custody after being arrested on charges of breaching public peace.
