Dr Jyotirmoy Pal appointed President-elect of Association of Physicians of India
Kolkata: Prof. (Dr.) Jyotirmoy Pal, a distinguished medical professional and professor in the Department of Medicine at the College of Medicine & Sagar Dutta Medical College, has been elected as the president of the Association of Physicians of India (API).
Dr. Pal’s appointment marks a significant milestone in advancing the organization’s mission to promote excellence in medical practice and research. He joined the API state chapter in 2015 and the central API in 2011.
Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. Pal shared his vision for the association. "As far as research in the medical field is concerned, I think we depend on the West but we need to make progress in our country. Just like in space and vaccines, India can potentially become a benchmark in medical research. We are in the process of developing an app named 'API-Doctorwise,' designed to popularize Indian medical journals and make research easily accessible for citation and global recognition," he announced. The app is scheduled for an official launch on January 23, marking a significant stride in Indian medical academia.
Dr. Pal also emphasized the critical importance of the doctor-patient relationship, advocating for a 3E approach: education, empathy, and ethics. He stressed the need for improved communication, humility, and community involvement to strengthen trust between healthcare providers and patients. "The role of doctors is evolving. From being seen as friends and service providers, it is now shifting towards a corporate-client dynamic, which we must navigate with care and take steps to ensure that the relationship between patient and doctor is based on trust," he stated.
Dr. Pal further highlighted the advancements in the fellowship programs under the Indian College of Physicians. He shared his recent experiences at international conferences and talked about the ongoing efforts to open Indian fellowship opportunities to foreign physicians. A draft for the necessary constitutional amendments is under review, with formalities expected to be completed soon. “Now even India is getting recognition worldwide. Foreigners also seek invitations to Indian conferences like APICON. I, as the president of API, would like to take new initiatives to popularize Indian research as much as possible.”
Dr. Jyotirmoy Pal is a distinguished figure in the field of internal medicine, holding an impressive array of qualifications, including MD, FRCP (London), FRCP (Glasgow), FICP, and FACP. A WHO Fellow, he has made significant contributions to medical education and research. Currently serving as the President-Elect of the Association of Physicians of India (2024-25), Dr. Pal also holds key roles such as Organizing Secretary and Scientific Chairman for APICON 2025.
His leadership credentials include being the Immediate Past Dean of the Indian College of Physicians and a former Secretary and Editor of the Journal of the Indian Medical Association. As a Council Member of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, he continues to influence healthcare policies and education. Dr. Pal’s academic contributions are prolific, with over 70 publications in national and international indexed journals.
