Mamata Banerjee lays foundation stone of Snayu Tirtha Medical College and Hospital, 150 MBBS seats to be added
West Bengal- On Monday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone of a new medical college and hospital named Snayu Tirtha Medical College and Hospital. The initiative, led by the Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (I-NK), is located in Shason Gram Panchayat of North 24 Parganas, Barasat.
The medical college and hospital will have 150 MBBS seats and 800 beds.
For this project, I-NK has taken up a large site of 33 acres of land at Khamar Naobaad near Rajarhat in North 24 Parganas with an initial funding of Rs 500 crore. The reason behind taking land in North 24 Parganas is that all the medical facilities will be provided by the National Medical Council (NMC). Furthermore, the premises will also accommodate colleges of paramedical sciences and nursing.
Moreover, full-time teachers at the medical college will be supported by guest teachers from Newcastle University, UK, among others, to educate the students. The syllabus will be based on current NMC guidelines and will help students in pursuing education abroad. Apart from this, there will be around 5 thousand jobs in the medical sector around this multi-specialty hospital. Beyond medical care, the hospital will also prioritise education related to every neurological disorder.
According to the Indian Express, Mamata Banerjee said, “It is going to benefit the Neuroscience stream along with neurosurgeons and neurologists. The 150-seat medical college and 800-bed hospital is a big and wonderful initiative by the group. There is a dearth of neurologists in Bengal and it will fill up the gap”.
Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata was started in 2010 and is the only neuro hospital in West Bengal. There are a total of 34 medical colleges in West Bengal, out of which 24 are government-run hospitals.
