On Duty doctor, 2 nurses assaulted by patients relatives, 5 arrested

Murshidabad: An on-duty doctor and two nurses, attached to Block Primary Health Centre (BPHC) of West Bengal's Murshidabad district, were brutally assaulted by the family members of a patient after the hospital advised them to take the patient to another better facility on Thursday evening.

The kin of the patient allegedly vandalized the hospital along with attacking the staff and one of the nurses, a new mother received a serious abdominal injury during the assault.

Police have already arrested five people in connection with the assault on the basis of a complaint lodged by the hospital authorities.

As per a recent media report by Hindustan Times, a 52-year-old was admitted to the hospital as she was suffering from respiratory problems. After an initial checkup, the doctor suggested that the relatives should take her to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) because did not have all the facilities which were required to treat her condition. However, the patient's party insisted on treating the patient at the facility and resorted to violence.

The kin of the patient allegedly manhandled the staff and attacked them while ransacking the hospital properties in a drunk state. One of the nurses sustained serious injuries in her abdomen during the assault."I was hit in my abdomen. I had recently undergone a Caesarean delivery and there are stitches. The mob also attacked another nurse and doctor and vandalized the furniture," said the nurse.

Prasanta Biswas, chief medical officer of health of Murshidabad district told Hindustan Times, "The patient had chronic respiratory problems. Her oxygen saturation level had dropped below 80 and she had high blood pressure. A BPHC is not equipped to treat such a patient...But some of her family members, who were in inebriated state, attacked the hospital staff." Finally, the patient was rushed to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) the same evening.

The patient was referred to a district medical college; however, her family claimed that they demanded treatment at the BPHC as the patient's condition was declining and it would be difficult to transfer her at night as the district medical college was at a distance of 35 -40km.

"When we reached the hospital, the patient's condition was critical. We demanded that she be treated, and we would shift her to the medical college the next morning. But the hospital staff pressured us to shift her at night itself. We never got the treatment and now police have arrested five of our relatives," said Torabuddin Sheikh, a relative of the patient.
