WB's medical college 1st student accuses 15 seniors of ragging, 2 suspended

West Bengal: A first-year MBBS student at Deben Mahata Government Medical College and Hospital, Purulia, recently alleged brutal ragging assault by senior students inside the boys' hostel. According to the complaint, the student was attacked by around 14-15 seniors at midnight after being harassed for several days, resulting in multiple injuries.
Following the complaint, the college’s anti-ragging committee held a meeting and investigated the allegations. Two main accused, a second-year and a fourth-year student, have been suspended and directed to vacate the hostel. The college authorities have acknowledged the incident and assured strict action against those involved.
According to the TOI report on ragging at the Medical College, a first-year student alleged brutal assault and filed a complaint. The student alleged that the two senior students had been harassing him for several days. Around midnight on Monday, at the behest of the two accused, 14-15 students attacked him in the boys' hostel campus and brutally beat him, leaving him with multiple injuries and bruises on his back.
TOI reported that following the incident, the injured student sought medical attention on Monday morning and filed a complaint with the college's anti-ragging committee. His parents also arrived in Purulia on Friday. A committee meeting was held, and after the allegations were substantiated, the authorities decided to suspend the students and instructed them to vacate the hostel.
Meanwhile, the medical college authorities have acknowledged the incident, and Medical Superintendent-cum-Vice Principal Sukumar Biswas has assured that appropriate action will be taken against the accused.
Medical Dialogues had recently reported a case where the family of the deceased first-year MBBS student alleged that he was subjected to sustained ragging and bullying at Government MGM Medical College, Indore, and sought a detailed probe into the role of seniors. According to relatives, the student had complained of humiliating rules imposed on juniors in the hostel and mess, which they claim caused severe mental distress.
