Man consumes toothbrush; doctors successfully remove it by surgery- a report
Arunachal Pradesh: The doctors of Bakin Pertin Memorial Hospital, Pasighat have encountered a rare and absurd case where one of the patients accidentally consumed a toothbrush and contacted the doctors for immediate help.
The doctors at the Bakin Pertin Memorial Hospital, Pasighat successfully removed the toothbrush from the man's stomach who had shockingly swallowed it while brushing on Tuesday morning. The patient is a resident of Roing, Lower Dibang Valley, and his condition is stable after the operation. Surgeon Bomni Tayeng along his team removed the toothbrush in a 35-minute long surgical operation.
Jt.Director Health Services (T&R), Pasighat, Dr. Dukhum Raina told Medical Dialogues that the patient is identified as a middle-aged man who swallowed a toothbrush while brushing in the morning of 15.9.2020. He immediately contacted Dr. Kabang Lego, a retired doctor of DFW, Assa Nursing Home Pasighat but he was unavailable as he was away from the Nursing Home. The patient then contacted Dr. Bolut Taki, ENT specialist who carried out his esophagoscopy, x-ray, and blood test but could not locate the toothbrush properly.
After that surgeon, Dr.Bomni Tayeng was consulted and the patient was admitted in the evening of 15.9.2020 at Bakin Pertin General Hospital Pand. The surgeon decided for conducting a laparotomy on 16.9.2020 under General Anaesthesia and accordingly the team removed the swallowed toothbrush. Dr. Dukum further added that "the patient is at surgical ward no.15 doing/recovering well without any complication which is a rare case that I never came across in my 30 years medical service."
Dr. Tayeng told Medical Dialogues that " it was getting difficult to trace the toothbrush. They asked the patient if it has gotten out while vomiting but the patient confirmed that it is still inside. After that, he along with his team conducted a 30 to 35 minutes long surgery and successfully removed the toothbrush from his stomach. Yesterday was the second day after the operation and the condition of the patient is stable. He has also started consuming liquid food."
