Viral Video: MP Doctor asks parents of patient to arrange for ventilator themselves, Suspended

When the family insisted that a ventilator should be arranged somehow, the doctor allegedly asked them to get one themselves, saying “it costs Rs one crore”.

Sagar (MP):  A doctor at a government hospital here was suspended Sunday after a video, where she is purportedly seen asking the parents of a child with burn injuries to arrange a ventilator themselves, went viral.

Anshika Ahirwar, a one-and-half-year-old girl, died at Bundelkhand Medical College Hospital Friday.

After the video went viral, Dr Jyoti Raut was suspended for negligence by divisional commissioner Manohar Dubey, a government spokesperson said.

Devendra Ahirwar, Anshika’s father, told the media that she suffered burn injuries Friday morning after falling into a pot of boiling water.

She was taken to Bundelkhand Medical College where the doctors said she had suffered 70 per cent burn injuries.

Her condition began to deteriorate in the afternoon, he said, alleging that no doctor was present in the ward then.

Dr Raut came to the ward after some time and told him that the child needed to be put on a ventilator, but the Burns Department of the hospital did not have one, Ahirwar said.

When the family insisted that a ventilator should be arranged somehow, the doctor allegedly asked them to get one themselves, saying “it costs Rs one crore”.

The girl died in the evening.

The alleged conversation was captured by someone on a mobile phone and circulated on social media.

College’s dean Dr G S Patel said Sunday that a ventilator was available in the ICU where the patient could have been shifted.

“We are conducting an inquiry. I was out of town. I am not aware of what transpired between the patient’s family and the doctor,” he said.

Madhya Pradesh government’s Public Relations Department said a committee headed by Sagar’s additional commissioner Virendra Singh Rawat has been set up for inquiry and the doctor has been suspended.

  1. Its an administrative failure to supend a doctor on duty who is helpless and already suffering from the administrative maladies at the workplace. The decision to suspend a doctor is totally wrong. Instead the goverment and administration at the college/hospital should work together for provision of adequate facilities and proper guidelines to deal with such a situation.

  2. Keep suspending all the Doctors in the government. You expect magic to do without Ventilators. One day all the Govt Hospital would shut down without proper facilities. Then Govt will fall at the Private hospitals feet for the people, those days are not far off. Even if you get 1 Ventilators, 100\’s of new born or Infants would be waiting. Please learn how the NHS in UK is being run. As long as these Politicians change, nothing is going to happen

  3. So true
This news clearly states that parents insisted the doctor to arrange ventilator somehow.
It\’s the duty of administration and government, n not the doctor.
Why the hell should ba doctor be suspended

  4. U r only one doctor available to open ur mouth, so I blame u, if u escape u are good, u r sweetheart toothed ,or sweet mouthed then silently u kill baby also it\’s fine , Soo finally blame the doc on duty … Sham shame… Both… And for the doc … U could have said I would see for ICU ,idont know whether it\’s available, consider a bit of parents agony … Bloody patients are also arrogant….. There should be no further docs in next gen., Then only ppl will get it !!! Stupid society, idiotic heirachy& DB buerocracy and soiled politics to play over each other ,.. we deserve for studying all this !!!

  5. Most of the times, some ventilators would be out of service or not working properly espcially for a child to be put on it. But when some incident like this would occur suddenly the authorities would claim there was a ventiltor to save their own asses. Situation is never going to improve unless doctors stand up together against this administration, which often includes the seniormost doctors administrative positions looe MS, dean and all.

  6. Dean is just making her scapegoat to protect own skin

  7. Medicos have become spineless , no guts to standup to such idiotic stuff. Just pull each other\’s leg.
