AIIMS Madurai site inspected by Architecture team
Madurai: A team of experts in hospital architecture, including eight from Japan, recently visited the site of proposed branch of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, AIIMS Madurai at Thoppur.
Official sources informed that the team also comprising officials from central and state governments would carry out inspections till June 15 and submits its report to the government.
Medical Dialogues had reported that the institute will provide leadership in advanced healthcare, medical education and research in the region. This location will primarily benefits people residing in the Southern backward districts of Tamil Nadu.
The new AIIMS Madurai will add 100 Under Graduate (MBBS) seats and 60 BSc (Nursing) seats and will have 15-20 super speciality departments. Each new facility will add around 750 hospital beds and serve around 1,500 outpatients daily.
Though the Madurai AIIMS was announced in the 2015-16 budget, there was a delay in identifying the location and the union cabinet approval came in December 2018.
In December 2018, Union Cabinet approved for the establishment of AIIMS facility in Thoppur near Madurai. The project was approved under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The total cost incurred on the project is of of Rs 1,264 crore. The project will be purely funded by the central government.

Medical Dialogues earlier reported that Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi approved a plan to set up 20 All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) across the country, six of which have already been established, and to upgrade 73 medical colleges.
